Taking Your Health Into Your Hands
A few quotes by Flávio Passos on taking your health into your hands:
“The quality of your choices determines the quality of your life.”
“The mind is made up of the information it receives. The body, of the nutrition it receives. You choose the raw materials.”

THE BODY IS PART OF NATURE
Natural medicine is based on the principle that the body is part of Nature, made of the same elements that make up the Earth’s biosphere.
Water, Earth, Fire and Air Are Present in the Body
The same water that runs in the rivers and flows into the ocean runs in the veins and flows into the heart. The same minerals that give a rock its hardness properties are present in our skeleton, which supports the muscle structure.
The heat that warms up the body to its ideal homeostasis temperature is the same fire that burns in the sun and in the center of the Earth.
The wind that blows and moves the clouds is the same that our lungs breathe in and breathe out, stimulating our vital functions.
Water, earth, fire and air—elements that are present in each life form.
You Are An Inhabitant of Your Body
Your body is a biological garden, a complex machine that serves as a temporary housing for the Being, consciousness and Spirit. It is a vehicle that lets you feel, see, hear and enjoy your life experience on Earth.
One day you were born in it and one day you will return it to the Earth, so that it can be recycled and decomposed back into raw material.
Although it is very common to confuse yourself with the housing, the truth is that you are an inhabitant of your body. To understand this is the foundation of this study.
Be the Caretaker of Your Health
As an inhabitant of this body, you must be the caretaker of its integrity and help it in whatever way possible so that your body can manifest its basic program: Health.
Every living being has a survival mechanism and your body is biologically programmed to constantly adapt itself to the manifestation of this balanced state.
Health is well being, it is to be comfortable within your own skin. Your health becomes so comfortable that it is invisible. What we then call sickness is an unbalance.
And an unbalance always makes itself noticeable: through pain, suffering or discomfort so that you take note of it and help correct the problem and return to comfort.
Many times an illness is simply a message from the body asking for care, asking for an adjustment of some aspect of your life style.
IT IS BEST TO PREVENT THAN TO CURE
Another principle of natural medicine is that it is best to prevent than to cure. Truthfully, not only is it best, but prevention is also more economic, more effective and more comfortable. And less painful as well.
Natural medicine suggests that you, as the caretaker of your body, take upon yourself the task of caring for yourself, and accept the fact that it is your responsibility to care for your own garden. Natural medicine suggests that you study and create a personal Health Plan.
Health Insurance or Sickness Insurance?
Many do not perceive that they are responsible for their own well being and believe that paying a monthly allowance to a company will guarantee an insurance in cases of “insured” illnesses. Well, what is normally called a Health Plan or health insurance, is in reality a sickness insurance.
Hospital and doctors exist for emergencies, accidents and unforeseen problems—but they do not help you with the daily maintenance of your personal health. To water your own garden with the necessary care is a personal and non-transferrable task.
A doctor’s primary function, as Hippocrates put it, is to educate the individual to take care of him or herself. Hippocrates is the father of western medicine. Any treatment must be preceded by a lifestyle balance. A strong immune system is a lot more efficient in preventing and curing diseases than any other medicine or treatment.
Someone who values quality of life and looks to live a full life, with as little unbalances as possible, must focus his or her practical attention on two things:
1. Nutrition: Offer the body everything it needs
Pure air, pure water, contact with Nature, sun light on the skin, physical activity, adequate rest, affection… and, of course, an adequate nourishment. The body needs to have access to nutritional prosperity—in other words, to have at its disposal all of the raw materials it needs to build and strengthen itself up.
Rich foods, pure foods, easy to assimilate, foods that offer the body the substances it needs in all of its functions. Complete proteins, essential healthy oils, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, various protective substances offered by Nature itself for life to succeed.
Therefore, besides studying to know the best options of what to eat, of how to prepare a diet that fits your personal metabolism and unique lifestyle, it is also important to understand the following:
Moving the body, letting it rest, receiving affection and visiting Nature’s preservation areas untouched by man are also part of this set of needs for good health.
Be on the alert so that nothing is missing in the caretaker’s job.
2. Detoxing: avoid exposing the body to that which it has difficulty processing
Everything that pollutes nature, also pollutes the body.
Eating hydrogenated fats is similar to throwing plastic in a river. Hydrogenated oil’s molecular composition is very similar to plastic.
Artificial chemicals, pesticide residues, environmental pollution, metabolical residues… ideally you would organize your life to avoid contact with certain circumstances that make you pay a price and hamper the body’s work in manifesting Health.
Here I would also include the importance of periodically doing a heavy-duty cleansing of the body—a detox routine. A set of practices that help the body remove from its structure accumulated leftovers.
To keep the house clean is also one of the caretaker’s tasks.
IN YOUR HANDS
It is a fact that to take up responsibility for your own health is the first step in cultivating it.
Believe me: no one can do that for you. It is your duty to grow your knowledge and experiment with the possibilities; that way you will know what sits well with you and what does not.
Knowing how to discern one from the other is the first step in choosing with wisdom.
Developing Fullness of Life and Self-Rulership
There are numerous challenges on this path. A wiseman once said that it is easier to change a man’s religion than his eating habits. It’s true. Still, to confront and little by little overcome this challenge is something that enriches your vision of the world and strengthens your will.
Ideally, an evolutionary path of your own eating habits must begin with a higher goal than just lose weight, look better, improve results in blood tests. We welcome those results, but they are a consequence. The real goal is the development of fullness of life and self-rulership.
To dominate your taste buds is an important step for those who wish to dominate their own impulses, overcome addictions and become the master of their own lives.
You are the master of your own choices. He who is able to choose the quality of his food has can choose his own thoughts with greater ease.
The Path to Health Is in Your Hands
The quality of your choices determine the quality of your life. Just as the mind is built based on the information it receives—reading, conversation, experiences—the body is also made up of the raw materials it receives as nutrition.
My purpose is to help you develop your own wisdom, facilitating your access to polished knowledge, devoid of myths or ideologies, always current and simplified.
I like the path of least resistance, that which offers the maximum benefits with the least amount of effort.
The goal is to facilitate your life with recipes, tips, strategies and selected products that make a difference. I am here to help you on your journey, but the choice is in your hands.
